Practicing Body Positivity

In 2016, we started feeling better about our bodies. Now in 2017, we’re seeing more body positivity and inclusivity in fashion and lifestyle industries. That didn’t happen over night. Just a few years ago in 2014, we were feeling pretty crappy about ourselves.

It took a lot of work and pushing. There was an obvious push for inclusive lifestyle and fashion representation, so it made sense for these companies to make moves. But how did that happen? What does this mean for the individual person?

Practice. We have to change the way we think about ourselves, and that takes a lot of work. If you’ve been in the habit of beating yourself up, thinking negative thoughts about yourself and just generally being a jerk to yourself, it’s going to take time to rewire your brain. It’s about breaking the habit.

Her Campus has some good tips on getting started and how to follow-up the beginning steps, but the best one has to be to stop judging your body and begin thanking it for what it already does for you.

Another good one from Ginelle Testa is to know that you don’t have to do anything to earn your worth. You deserve to love yourself. Period.

Like so many other times, we’re are own worst enemies when it comes to body positivity. We can scream and moan at the media and fashion industry for affecting the way we see our bodies, but the real change has to come from within. We have to stop judging our bodies and begin to appreciate them for what they are. We have to take care of ourselves. We have to love ourselves.

So, take a deep breath (or 10) and start to appreciate yourself. You deserve it.
